Wellington News.

The Australian prophet told us correctly and beat our own JKdwin this time. It did come a howler after the judging for the Show, and on Thursday last the weather was remarkable, even for Wellington—dost and stones flying in the morning and a drenching rain at night. Thursday the 21st (Show day) was a half-and-half holiday. Banks and lawyers' offices, of course, shut up when they get the chance, bat retail people have enough to do to keep the wolf from the door without turning an honest or dishonest penny away. Bertie, of ' Tontine action ' celebrity, is doing a grand business at the Pier Hotel, Wellington : but you see he is such a jolly fellow that even if a chap doesn't want a drink he goes in to talk ' Tontine.' Mrs Harding, of the Temperance Hotel, Manners-street, has made a big success of it. What is nicer than to sipyoar ' ginger ale ' to the mußic of a Broad wood piano. James Smith, of Te Aro House, has left on a pleasure trip for England. Some peopte say there is more business than pleasure in it ! Strange that four of the best paid and oldest hands at Te Aro House should have their services dispensed with a fortnight before James Smith started on his pleasure trip to the Old Country. The Wellington A. and P. Association's Second Annual Show took place at the Hutt racecourse on the 2t>th and 27th, and was very successful. The ladies complain that no accommodation was provided for them to go to and irom the grand stand, and they had to shew their ankles in creeping under wire fences, which those who had not pretty ones did not like. The Wellington Horticultural Society's Spring Show opened on Wednesday the 27th, and the display eclipsed all former efforts; but the Wellington weather, of course, prevented hundreds from enjoying the sight of the beauties of nature. Messrs Cooper and MoNab were the principal prize takers. Who is the dark-eyed Hebe in Mannersstreet who says Fred is the best looking masher at Shelly Bay ? Lofty is in trouble again. Beware of the girls. You should not talk co much, Lofty, when at the Bay.
