Alice.

(Written, by Request, for a Friend. Alice is the true ideal Of what a girl should be, With her charms so pure and real She has fascinated me. With her eyes as blue and tender As the violet's softest dyes ; Or the azure in its splendour That pervades these southern akies. With her lips whose rosy treasure So invites the amorous kiss — Which to think of ia a pleasure, And to taste a peerless bliss ! Her cheeks of lily whitness, Her hair of auburn hue, Her form of grace and lightness Entrance my raptured view. Her eyes appear to sparkle With love's bewitching grace, No frowning looks may darkle On my darling's smiling- face. In mien she is not stately ; In stature not too tall, She moves but not sedately As queen in palace-hall ; But fairy-like and graceful Is she in all her ways ; Her dress is neat and tasteful . To woo th' admiring gaze. She is as brisk a walker As any in Parnell ; And such a pretty talker If I the truth might tell. At times, when I escort her To church, we gaily hie To that romantic quarter, St. Mary's, by-the-bye. I join in the devotion, Each hymn sounds fresh and clear ; I have some hazy notion Of aermons that I hear. But then, you see, I'm sitting Demurely by her side ; And here love seems so fitting To be with truth allied 1 And she avows to love me — And so, my darling true. By the heaven that smiles above me, I trust alone in you ! Sylvia.
