I intend to go to the Poll, and am in favou of a thorough system of retrenchment— such a reduction of expenses as will bring our expenditure well within our income, and admit of a gradual reduction of the Property Tax. This retrenchment must be carried out without fear or favour and be sufficient for the end in view. This I consider to be the first and most important duty of the new Parliament about to be elected. This being so, 1 beg to withdraw from the contest, as I have no great ambitiow to enter Parliament, neither do I wish to see your votes so split up as to cause you to be represented by a candidate elected by a minority of electors.
