Baptists and the Bible in Schools
' A Parent ' writes regarding the Baptists and the Bible in schools. We cannot give his letter in fall. He makes some pood points, however. He asks : — ' What good can the reading of the Bible do to thoughtless children ? And what good does it do to the old children who read it, and have read it until they have it by rote P What vagary, from Varleyisra to Baeyertzism and oilistn, does not find evidence of some kind in support of it in the Bible P The children are growing up ignorant of every religious fact contained in the Bible, and the paraona would like to put upon the shoulders of the public school teaohers the duty that they neglect, or are incompetent to discharge. The teacher of a moderatelysized pnblic school asked the pupils in the four upper standards in my hearing, last week, did they ever hear of Moses, and only one answered ' yes ;' but all he knew about him was that he saw a burning bush. Not a pupil in the school knew how the Ten Commandments were received by or given to man. The Sunday schools, with their ignorant bits of boys and girls as teachers, are a shameful farce, and do a deal of harm. Religious knowledge is fast disappearing from the world.'
