MR JOHN BRYCE,
( ' Baron Bryce of Panhaka,' as he was long ago dubbed in the Obsehvek), is a candidate for Waikato, by special invitation Has been associated with the Continuous Ministry, but has economic leanings, and a character for honesty, straightforwardness and earnestness which do not quite fit him for that crowd of associates. He will retrench to the last ' bawbee,' will not pocket a brass farthing over his salary, and will not give anything to his friends. I don't like his political programme, which is a very barren one ( ' Barren Bryce : might be his title now) ; still less do I like his avowed preference for the Property Tax ; but ail the same, I should not object to Bryce, as leader either of the Government or Opposition. I fancy he is free of banking influence, and that is something to be thankful for.
