MERCURY BAY
Who is the independent governess that gets a free invitation to a ball given by the working men, and then objects to their company ? On Friday, the 24th, the footballers' annual ball was held in the Athenaeum. The decoration of the hall with flags and various kinds of ferns made it look splendid . Dancing commenced at 8 p.m. and was kept up until midnight, when the refreshments were passed around. Mr Sewell sang the song 'On the Ball,' which was well received, being appropriate for the oocasion. When the second part of the programme had been gone through, the dawn of day made its appearance. The following: are the dresses worn by the ladies :— " Mrs G. White, dove coloured embroidered dress, red poppies ; Mrs Middlemass, canary coloured silk, cream drapery ; Mrs Hughes, black dress, cardinal trimmings ; Mrs ft. White, electric blue dress, high Medici collar ; Mrs Terry, black dress, silver flowers ; Mrs McLeod, cream nun's veiling, satin trimming; Mrs T. Lowe, grey silk, gold ornaments ; Mrs A. Lowe, cream muslin, silver ornaments ; Mrs Martin, cream dress, faded rose trimmings ; Mrs Kirk, white muslin, draped with cardinal ; Mrs broker, black draped with white lace ; Mrs .Neville, white dress, silver ornaments; Mrs P. McCarthy, black dress, blue sash ; Mra Bagstrom, white costume, pink sash ; Mrs Clark, black dress, gold ornaments ; Mrs Laycock, black dress, blue sash ; Mrs W. Lee, grey embroidered costume; Mrs Mooney, green [ shaded satin ; Mrs Humphreys, pale blue costume ; Miss j Ryan, black silk, high Medici collar, gold beads ; Miaß ;S. Wilson, green tarlatan, pink sash ; Miss E. Trail, fawn embroidered dress, pale pink trimmings ; Miss M. White, cardinal satin, silver flowers ; Miss Watts, white ! embroidered drees, pale blue sash ; Miss Lynch, black lace skirt, satin body, blue aigrette ; Miss Slator, pale pink iace, ruby roses ; Miss Clay, pale pink dress, white masher front ; Miss F. Trail, white muslin, pink trimmings; Miss E. Wilson, pink nuns veiling; Miss Butler, cardinal and pink satin ; Miss Cummings, pink nuns veiling ; Miss E. White, maroon dress, white masher front ; Miss D. Sheland, cardinal dress, cream masher front ; Miss S. Sheland, white dress, pink sash ; Miss A. Sheland, white and pink; Miss Wright, dark green, pale blue front ; Miss M. McLean, black <costuine, red roses ; Miss Meikle, white muslin, ruby and cream roses ; Miss Seville, while muslin, pale blue sash; Miss Cieary, white nuns veiling, silver beads ; Miss Bush, pale blue costume ; Miss McLean, violet; silk, black lace drapery ; Miss McLeod, black velvet, blue trimmings ; Miss Madill, white dress, blue sash : Miss ychoefield, white dress, black sash. Mr Ansenne supplied the music, while Messrs McCarfcy and Percell did the duty of M.C. in first class style. Ihe dancing committee did not decide who was belle, so I will leave it for the fair sex to judge for themselves.
