Wellington News.

George Shaw, an ex-bagman, whom I saw pass through Wellington last Saturday on hia way to Christchurob, recalls an actual truth, somewha* similar to that narrated in your issue of the 11th October, entitled ' A Burglar's Story.' Some thirteen jears ago, George, then an assistant in a Southern drapery house, kindly lent some small sums of money to a fellow a&aistant, who had expectations. Said expectations beingrealised.th' fortunate one determined to reward George, and wrote his first cheque out for .£IOO, giving it to him without interest on his note of hand for twelve months George prospered and paid it back. His friend embarked in business, which failed Now comes the tequel. About nine months ago, the once wealthy man wrote to him fcom Wellington, asking him to send him 103 as a loan, by reiurn mail, giving an urgent reason ard reminding him of old times. The reply caraa (I saw it) :— Dear !*ir, — I have received your note and am very corry I cannot comply with your request. — Yours, etc. Such ia life, dear boys. The sttiUe being ovev, all the wharf hands and lumpers presented themselves alopg with the froo labourers for engagement at li-ilf-pasr. seven this (Monday) morning, 3rd inst. Capable men from both sidee were taken on. Captain Strange, of the Union Company, committed an error of judgment by telling a man, who had previonsly been in the company's employ for five years, that ' I have no work for you or the likes of yon.' This waa not calculated to pour oil on the troubled watera. The gallant captain might have declined hia services in a more courteous manner. Wellingtoniana are going to give a grand ball to the Admiral and officers of the Imserial German Sqnadron Bhortly expeoted here, and the night after, one to the noncommissioned officers and men. Of course the Misses Deda Muok and the upper ten will be invited to the first, and Sarah Ann atd Betsy Jane, at. the factories, invited to suet the men. What gay old larka they'll

have ! But perhaps they will feel annoyed at the * distinction,' and won't go ? Have a bit of pride left, don'tcherknow. Mr W. C. Fuller, of Messrs Levin and Co., promised to love, honor, and obey Miss Murray. In consideration of this, the shipping in harbour flew their flags. Mr A. W. Brown, a former Mayor, announces himself as a candidate for the Mayoralty. Several gentlemen in Wellington are seriously thinking of floating a compauy to start a new paper, to be called l The Matrimonial News,' after the style of Leslie Fraeer Duncan's London paper. They say there's money in it ; and our own Kennedy Mao, it is said, will be asked to fill the editorial chair. The girls at the Petone Woollen Mills have promisee! their aesista* cc, thould Mac consent. I always thought that personating a detective was considered a very serious offence. Messrs J. R. Blair and .1. H. Bethune, J.P 's, however, do not think so. A man named Edward Ponekinria amused himself by searching a private house, as he said, in quest ot a ' speeler,' in the early hours of the morning. Being afterwards arrested and brought m< at the R M. Court, the sapient J.P.s reminded him he had held himself liab'e to a year's imprisonment ; but iv consideration of his respectability, and 'being tight,' concluded to dismiss the charge. So now gay and festive uuf-ses can enter and search people's houses in Wellington without any fear as to re&ults.
