A Debt Collector on his Mettle.
I am a debt collector And my name is Andy Dunn ; I try to smile and look benign And think it jolly fun ; But the smile is ever dying out, And often turns to sadness, And long delay, from day to day, Makes sadness turn to madness ! The livelong day I ask for coin, But very seldom get it ; For many say they'd like to pay, And some, they're not indebted ! And some there are who blandly smile, And ask for more delay ; And some who will, and some who won't, And some who cannot pay. And many say, with brazen face, When they decline to settle — ' You can't take blood out of a stone,' Which puts me on my mettle. I then keep hammering away — For gold is often found In country that looks hard and pinched, If you prospect the ground. Take warning, then, ye Auckland folk, Who try just debts to shun, And be prepared to meet the smile Of Debt Collector Dunn !
