A Graceless Scamp.

" The nearer the kirk, the further from grace," is a saying which embodies a profound truth, in so far as it indicates the character of parsons' sons. The rector of Thwaite, in England, is a Mr Grace, and his son is of the usual graceless stamp of parsons' offspring. The young gentleman, it seems, is of a pugilistic turn, and a boy named Harvey, one of his father's parishioners,* having refused to bow to him (little wonder either) he straightway struck him. The boy's mother naturally went to the rectory to complain of the treatment to which Harvey had been subjected, whereupon Mr Gilbert Grace, the rector's son, struck her four times with a whip. For this offence he was sentenced to pay a fine of seventeen shillings, or to go to prison for seven days. It is with a pang of real regret that one hears Mr Gilbert Grace was able to procure the seventeen shillings.
