Late Church Items.

The meshes are closing round a certain parson. The next charges to be investigated accuse him of forging declarations of membership, and more serious allegations are in reserve.

A sneak thief lately stole £3 from Foreign Mission boxes at Thames Wesleyan Sundayschool. The mean wretch must have been a hypocrite as well as a thief, for it is clear he was well. acquainted with, the building and had duplicate keys.

Who says that the church is not indebted to the beer and whisky trade ? At Devonport Presbyterian Church, last Sunday night, the gas went wrong (perhaps because the Eev. R. Sommerville was officiating, and Tie is no gas bag), so a beer bottle and a whiskey bottle were got, candles were stuck in them, and by the light of other days the service proceeded ! Things spiritual and spirituous are after all closely allied.

A " jug " incident took place in a Presbyterian Church last Sunday ; but the foolery in this case was unintentional. The rev. gentleman who was expounding foreign mission, propounding Gospel truth, and pounding the desk at St. David's Church last Sunday morning, got so engrossed in his subject that he suddenly gave a swing of his arm that sent the glass of water, in front of him, flying among the choir. No one was hurt, and the muscular parson, speedily recovering his equanimity, said — " I beg your pardon. This has never happened with me before, and I assure you it won't occur again !"
