WHANGAREI.
Sports all over. Woodpecker fell,_ as your correspondent anticipated. Never mind, J.T., better luck next time... J.M. will keep that .£2O a prisoner. ..The truth match has not come off yet; the betting on the event is even ; it would be hard to pick, as both gentlemen are wellknown to be able to put on plenty of pressure.. G. C., the S.T., seems to be the fashion among the ladies — keep it dark and I'll buy you a Waterbury...H.F. was a bit swift on Commercial in the trotting match... R.D. made a nice little thing out of the totalizator on sports day, I suppose. He will be going to town shortly to buy another shooting dog. ..What mate a lot of the boys so swift at J.D.H.'s the night of the concert. Good whisky, eh?. .. The champion duet songsters did not turn up at the concert. Why was it thus ?... J.M. was fair on the job when he saw that boy take old Commercial over the hurdle in front of the stand ; he had bright visions of a .£6 6s saddle, in his mind's eye ('missed it by thunder')... Wouldn't E.W. have laughed if he had won the other saddler's saddle? Never mind, E., your old liorse wanted a bath...J.M.G. looks very well after his trip to town...J.M.G. and Miss K.B, look very nice doing their afternoon trip to the town wharf. ..M.H.F. looked very well at the show ; couldn't be rubbed out as Mrs M. says... J.H. is back from town, (soda and claret)... W.B. P. is under very severe Government (petticoat)... J.M.G. is now a most noble licensed commissioner ; it is on the cards that he will give our M. H.R. a run for parliamentary honours next general election. ..P.S.B. is of opinion that J.D.H. can bet .W.P.W. when they come to the post, if so
W.F.W. must be very precious... Your correspondent has just heard of a marriage that is on the board. G.C., the S.I. is about (so they say) to take unto himself a wife. I thought he was making things a bit subsequent with the fair sex ; however, he is about to be cooked at last.
