— Colonel Hume is novy spoken of as ' our only colonel.' -The Wanganui City Bifles are said to be on the eve of disbandment. — Captain Sonierville says the Melbourne rifle meeting was very badly managed, ' • — The City Guards had a very large % muster at their daylight inspection last Saturday} — A race for naval, cutters has been placed on the programmfe of the Auckland Regatta Club. — Colonel Hume was entertained at dinner on Monday last by the officers of the Auckland volunteers. ■ . ■ ' ' — The following are some of. the percentages at volley and independent firing made in Canterbury :— Kaipoi (32 # ti4), Rangiora (30:35), Christ's College (2946),. Geraldine (25-83), and Temuka (28 48). ,•<.".'■ . — Under the new Defence : honorary majors,by going up for examination, can be placed on the same footing as majors on. the active list. Hon. Major Purnell consequently intends going up for his examination. ■ — The Wairoa Eifleshave not yet received *. a challenge from the A Battery to fire their , J return match ; so, therefore", it is not likely thai the match will be fired before the end of January' at the earliest. It seems a pity the corps should break, up, seeing it is the secotd oldest in the province, survived only a few months by the A Battery. — The Wanganui Herald publishes the date of inspections of the various corps and then publishes the following par :— Theae inspections will be well worth seeing. Viewed in' the light of the last regulations, the "Volunteer Force, to use the words of old army officerai ■; is ' going to the devil, sir.' Battalion /movements, let alone anything more ambitious, can be done without ' right turn,' ' order arms,' ' left wheel,' . ' present arms,' and orders of this kind will be., about the level of the new inspector* "As to these regulations I will have a, word later on, meanwhile I venture to prophesy that if Colbhel and Prison Inspector Hume has his way the Volunteer.
