WE CLING TO TEE OLD CHURCH YET.
The Old Church stands on the village green, Massive and ivy-bound ; The years may come, and the years may go> With sorrow or gladness crown'd, But it rears its towers up to the skies, With the martyrs' blood still wet; And in spite of the foeman's bloody stake We cling to the Old Church yet. The bigots may try to rule and sway^The faith of our early days, And a phantom creed they may teach andplead, And scoff at our humble praise, But the Old Church stands a gem of grace, In the hearts of her sons she is set, And in spite of the foeman's frown and sneer We cling to the Old Church yet. The scoffer may laugh ; but the Old Church stands The vanguard of freedom's realm. And woe betide the vandal crew That seek her to overwhelm ! We've fought for the faith in the days gone by, And who will the fight forget, When her sons were slain for their faith in God? So we cling to the Old Church yet. The Old Church stands on the village green, Massive, and firm, and strong ; And a million hearts are true to-day To guard her from the wrong. She shall rear her towers up to the skies, With her sons' blood newly wet ; For in spite of the sneer, or the bloody stake We cling to the Old Church yet. W. R. Wills.
