WAIMATE

The ball given by tbe bachelors of Waimate the other night was a complete success. An excellent programme was gone through, under the management of Mr Edwards, who efficiently acted as M.O. Among the best lady dancers were Miss Gr., Miss N. and Mi3s M. It was a matter of difficulty to decide who was best entitled to the honour of being belle of the ball, as all looked equally charming and danced well. Conspicuous among the gents, for their dancing were Mr M., Mr W. 6h, Mr F. E., and Mr H. 0.; the former taking the l cake ' for waltzing— your correspondent is quite sure that it was nob to be beaten. It was a treat to dance to Miss P.'s excellent playing, it being spirited and in. beautiful time. About midnight a splendid supper was disposed of, and dancing was resumed and kept up until 3 a.m., when all went home well pleased. The absence of Senor Samu-hells Maiohallo, the eminent Italian violinist, was much regretted by

all his friends and admirers. It is a great pity that more of the young bachelors of Waimate do not take lessons in dancing. It was quite amusing to see the number who were all of the same mind, viz., that the doorway wa3 not able to look after itself and wanted support. This is not a bad opportunity to remind those who indulge in the 'obnoxious weed ' that cigar-smoke is not always agreeable to ladies, especially if it happens to float into the heated atmosphere of a ball-room. Won't Mr F. F. look when he finds that a ball in Waimate can be a success without his valuable assistance !
