THE A.0.0. Y. BAY OF PLENTY,
After many misgivings as to the weather,, and a long barney with the Northern S.SCompany — during which the stubbornness of of the Scotch was exemplified, our team at last got aboard the s.s. "Wellington, and at 8 p.m. on Monday was on its way to Tauranga. Animal spirits ran high, but luckily the sea did not, and we were enabled to enjoy a beautiful passage. About 9 p.iru. the team, was called together to elect a. captain. Mr Blair having been unanimously elected, he called for refreshers for his team, who drank success to their noble selves--10.30 p.m. found most of us iv our berths,,, and after a good sleep most of us awoke at--5 o'clock. Then began the pranks customary amongst. travelling teams, which, however*, disappeared when coffee and biscuits madetheir appearance. Shortly before 7 a.m. we stopped, and this delayed our arrival alongside the wharf to 8 a.m. There was a goodly assemblage on the wharf, amongst whom were some of the Tauranga cricketers. We lostvery little time in getting to Menzie's hotel,, where, after having enjoyed a bath 3 and. donned our flannels, we sat down to a good breakfast, at least so thought two of theteam, who seemed very keen on the victuals. "We had very little time to spare, as thematch was to commence at 10 a.m. The. usual delay brought us to 10.30, when. Blair having won the toss from Goldsmith,.. Barton and "Webster commenced the defencefor A.G.C., to the bowling of Griffiths and Rutherford. With only 6 runs a fast onefrom Griffiths brushed Webster's bail off Barton was run out with the score at 15*. Blair and E. C. Beale were now associated,., and carried the score to 71, when the former was caught. It is worth noting that while the big gun was making 47, Beale made 6 i. Howard made 12, and E. C. Beale I%^ No one else got beyond the unit, and-thfe last 3 wickets onlyjadded 2 runs. Total, 98.. Griffiths and Rutherford faced A. M. Bealeand Matheson, but only 1 was on the boarcL when Rutherford was caught by Matheson,. off A. M. Beale. Surtees, who is a fine bat,, followed, and made 6, when he was bowled! by one of Matheson's breakbacks. Griffithswas bowled by A. M. Beale, with the scoreat 18. Steele, who played so well for Our' Boys CO. this season, played well for 1 5, when he was bowled by a cunning one from Gould. .gM None of the others troubled the scorer inuch,.^^ though Whelan played well for five. Thelast 4 wickets fell for 1 run, with the total at" 41, or 57 behind the A.C. Blair having hurt his finger, did not go in as early as he might have done, but sent in Cheeseman and Webster to commence the 2nd innings of A.C. The first wicket fell at 0 ; 2nd, 13 ;. 3rd, at 17. E. Beale, A. Beale, and Blair were the only double-figures, with 15, 16,. and 14. The total was 70. when the last.
<
•wicket fell. Whelan and Steele opened the '2nd innings of Tauranga, Beale and Gould "being entrusted with the attack. Surtees and Whelan played well for 12 and 8, and when time was called the score was only :2G for 7 wickets. A. Beale took 6 wickets for id runs. A few words for the home team : -Griffiths deserves great praise for his energy in regard to the pitch and to his bowling. It seems a pity that men like Surtees, -~ s "Whelan, and Steele should go without practice, for if they were in practice they would foe hard men to bowl. 1 should advise the B. of P. team to come to Auckland for a week, bringing with them Bellars, who is ■there, and play the iDiincipal clubs.
