PRACTICAL PHYSIOLOGY.

The Thames Advertiser is very properly gratified to find that the new head master of the Waio-Karaka school there teaches Physiology by practical experiments, and seems to think that this is a novelty. Three or four years ago, under the head mastership of the first principal appointed when the school was opened, the then assistant master, Mr A. S. Webber— now, we believe, second master of the Parnell school— gave regular progressive lessons in elementary science with experiments, for which he provided the apparatus, &c, at his own expense. His physiological course was illustrated by the heart, lungs, brain, and other part of a. sheep, dissected before the scholars, and their composition and functions were fully and carefully explained. It does not appear that any trouble was taken by the authorities of the school, at that period, to give publicity to their work beyond the walls of the- school. Anything like advertising themselves or their doings -was strongly disapproved by the Inspector, and no credit has, therefore, ever been given to the head teacher, who planned, or the assistant who carried out the science course. It does not detract from the doubtless excellent and practical methods of the present head of the school, to recall that other teachers have worked zealously and efficiently to impart to their scholars a clear * idea of the scientific subjects laid down m the syllabus, even at some cost of time, money, and trouble to themselves.
