HE WANTED TIME.
Insurance canvassers often put many queer ■questions to their victims. One of the former contrived to make his way into our sanctum the other day, and, after an unsuccessful wrestle with 'the editor, tried his persuasive powers on a gentleman who happened to be in the room, exhausting ■every conceivable argument in a vain endeavour to earn a commission. The Insurance tout was followed by another who represented some wine •company, and he was no more succnssf ul than the first. Here certainly was a case of the operation of the law of compensation in modern civilisation, for if the second tout was prepared to undermine one's health with bad wine, the first would have «qaaved matters by providing against the risks of cici'/vh. But one of the most singular questions .ever put by an Insurance tout to. a victim was submitted to a man at Napier the other day. Agent : l! Are you married ?" Candidate : "Yes. 1 ' A.: !t On Vvhat date were you married?" C: ** To-day. '*' A.: "How many children have you under I*B years of age ?" C: "O, hang it ! Give a, fellow time!"
