A ROMANCE OF THE KITCHEN.
Internecine strife, of a desultory, but very acrimonious character, has broken out amongst the domestics in one of our local eleemosynary institutions. The casus belli is amusing. Upon the advent of the Opera Troupe to the city the cook of the establishment, in defiance of the traditional usage, surreptiously sold the kitchen refuse (hitherto the special perquisite of the sculleryman), and appropriated the proceeds to his own use. The wronged individual was unable to account for such meanness on the part of his chief until, in visiting the Opera last week, he saw him seated in the front row of the dress-circle wah one of the " ladies" of the high life below stairs. Then the truth dawned upon the indignant gcullei'jmEn's mind. He and the housemaid had determined to gratify their musical- tastes with tii'* proceeds of the refuse, and the unscrupulous cook had resolved to baulk the scheme. Now, there is not enough balm in Gilead to mollify and soothe the wounded feelings of the dispossessed individual.
