FOB WHOM WAS THE CONSTITUTION FRAMEDP
Was the Constitution of New Zealand framed _fo_r the good of the people of the colony, or for any particular party or dominant clique ? Wo ask this- question because it would appear from a •recent act of the Whitaker Government that the VCoristitution of the Colony was designed for their peculiar benefit, altogether irrespective of the nrights of thepeaple,. whose servants they are. By
staking their existence as a Ministry on the qnestion : whether the people of New Zealand shall have the power to modify the Constitution under which they live, and declaring that they must abandon office if the principle were assented to by the peoples' representatives in Parliament, the Whitaker Ministry have practically declared that they have some peculiar interests ih the Constitution apart from or foreign to the interests and rights of the whole people of the Colony. The question may not have presented 'itself to them in that light, but that is the logical result of their action, and Aye leave our readers to reason out the other conclusions which follow.
