THE FAIBBUEN JEWELLERY.
The ink was hardly dry in the issue which recorded the visit of Mrs Millet and the episode in connection with the mangled remains of the Fairburn jewellery, when that gay young gentleman put in an appearance, and claimed the melancholy vestiges of his ill-fated courtships. When these mournful relics were displayed before him, instead of giving way to grief, he examined them with the greatest sang froid, andjtreated the affair as a good joke. He, however, asserts that the paste-dust in the parcel is not the remains of the genuine diamond ring, which in the fulness of his devotion and wealth he laid at the feet of his various lady loves, but a baser article that must have been substituted for the brilliant gem. which he repeatedly presented. He did not seem to see that there was anything improper in making the same set of jewellery do duty in a. series of courtships.
