THE OBSERVER CARTOON.
No. 14. — James McCosh Ciaee, Esq., Mayor 0~8 AUCKLAND. James McCosh Clark, Esq., Mayor of Auckland, is another of our successful commercial men. An old and highly-esteemed settler, industriously solicitous of Auckland's progress and prosperity, practical, shrewd, enterprising and upright in his business and social dealings and relations, he is deservedly popular. Haying served a long and faithful apprenticeship in municipal politics and entered \ipon his second term as Mayor, he has lately brought forward a scheme for the incorporation in the city boundaries of the boroughs and highway districts abutting thereon, and his proposals have been received with much favour. The success of the firm of which he is the senior partner, is evidenced by the extension of its business premises. As a citizen, Mr Clark is urbane, courteous and hospitable. Though he has failed to secure a seat in Parliament, his advent to the House is but a question of time. Mr Clark's great forte is finance, and political economy. Few men in New Zealand equal him in grasp of the intricate problems of figures and statistics, and in the force and clearness "with which he can explain the details and results of financial investigations and comparisons to a poptilar audience.
