THE TRAMWAY,
But the work that has been done in the .quarries is enormous, and still the blasting and .stone-breaking goes on. I have mentioned the •strong wall,' and the great piles of road metal which are sold to the local bodies as required. Want of direct railway communication, and the ■cost of carting have hitherto considerably reduced the profit on the sale of this metal, but in a short time this defect will be remedied by the construction of a branch tramway from the quarries to the railway. This tramway has been made entirely by prison labour, under the immediate . superintendences of Mr O'Brien and his officers. Most of the line was cut through solid rock, and tvas a work of great labour. The levels were taken by Mr O'Brien, and the sleepers and rails laid xinder his direction. So far as my unprofessional judgment goes, this tramway is as ;good a piece of engineering as if it had been con- , .structed by Mr Stewart, C.E., and a great deal more substantial than many similar undertakings in the Provincial District of Auckland. One can : detect; no signs of scamping. When this branch line ; shall haye been completed, trucks' will be ' loaded with the metal from the heaps and ; delivered to any part of the province to which the ■."railway .extends. The line will also be_available goods to the gaol. 'i '■''MX U 1 '-"wv I ."'- '..•." .'"''.■■.. ■ .7/4^-i'V.: :.'■'■'.■;/- .-;••.-■.--' -'-.'-.
