CAP AND JACKET

SPORTING TELEGRAMS

(FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.) Christchurch, Thursday. THE METROPOLITAN MEETING. The Melbourne Derby and Cup have seemed the all-absorbing topics of conversation during the last few days, onr own meeting being neglected altogether. Even on Monday night after the entries appeared there Avas but little speculation, though surprise was expressed at their smallness. The fact is lam afraid we arc going to have a very indifferent meeting. After my unsuccessful attempt at spotting the winners of the Melbourne Derby and Cup, I am almost afraid to tip ours, but as I know a little more about this meeting, and have seen all the horses, I hope to be a little nearer the mark. Commencing with the Derby, Mataku and Dauphin are in the same stable, and at present as the money is on Dauphin I must select him as the horse of the stable. The Peerless colt and Amulet are also in one stable, and the money being on Amulet I must have him for my choice. Hinemoa also has a big .show, but I can't stand a filly. Nonpareil is not good enough, and the others are of poor class. Therefore I place the horses for the Canterbury Derby thus : — Amulet ... ... 1 Dauphin... ... ... ... 2 Hinemoa ... ... ... 3 THE C.J.C. HANDICAP. For the C.J.C. Handicap I think we shall have about seven starters. Le Loup, the Aveight, will stop. Grip is doing well, and still keeps first favourite. Volunteer can't go the distance. Chancellor is a good outsider. Libeller has a nice weight, and one he is master of, and will be near winning. Lady Emma is fancied by many, and has also got a nice weight, so that I label her dangerous. The Governor, Dauphin, and Mataku I dont like in the company. Louis D'Or belongs to a dangerous stable, and if he is a good one he ought to win with his light impost. Hilda will find the company too good, and the distance too far. So I place Grip 1 Libeller 2 Louis DOr 3 For the Cup I shall place the Derby winner first, for I do not think Mata can be fit for this journey, and Grip is nofc good enough. THE WELCOME STAKES. The Welcome Stakes winner will be found amongst the following : — Siesta, Trinket, Cheviot, Vanguard, and one of Head's lot, and I place them in the above order. Of course there may be a lot of changes before the day which may throw out some of my fancies, but allowing all to go on as well as they are doing at present I think my tips will about come oft' this lime. The fields seem likely to be very small, but I expect some good racing and keen competition.
