SPORTING TELEGRAMS.
(FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENTS.) Napier, Wednesday. NAPIER MEETING. The sporting writer belonging to the evening paper here tipped Badsworth for the Elying Handicap, though the horse had been scratched a week previously. Kelly's £500 Derby sweep on the Spring Handicap, when closed, had 213 subscribers. There were three mistakes during the drawing. Only two members of the Southern King are here — Snider and Yoxiilc. There were two totalisators on the racecourse to-day ; both in the paddock. Only one (Hill and Poole's) did any business. Foul Play was pulled into a trot to let Badsworth pass him, as McDonald had declared to win with the latter. Badsworth was ridden very badly in the Flying Handicap, or he must have won easily. The bookmakers have all lost money. Wheeler fell oif Morning Star in the Hurdle Race most mysteriously, for he had just landed over a hurdle.'
Chhistcux'kch, Thursday. THE DERBY CRACKS AT EXERCISE. I intended, going to the Napier Spring Meeting, but on account of the postpomnent of the boat I could not get there in time. I have been out to see the horses do their work in the mornings recently. Mataku (brother to Mata) looks and gallops well. He was rather backward, but is corning on wonderfully well, and will hare a big show for the Derby, if intended. Dauphin is admired very much by the touts. Ducssa (the En Evant filly) goes grandly, but I do not think distance is her forte. Nonpareil and La Mode are doing well, the first-named being the best for the Derby, as he can better carry the weight. Eraser's nominations do their work on his private gallop ground. I hear Louis DOr is the best. The Amulet and Peeress colt also have their private gallops ; but as the party have got their money on Amulet, Peeress colt seems to be knocked out of the betting. I shall go for Charm's son. The other Derby horses I pass over. THE C.J.C. HANDICAP. Turning to the G.J.C. Handicap, Grip, the favourite, lias got a very xigly style of going, and I shall want to see him win a big race before I believe in him. Lady Emma has very much improved since last season, having furnished into a big mare, She is in beautiful condition, and will be a hard nut to crack. This mare is backed for more public money than any horse in the race. Libeller comes next, but as Mason and Yallance, like Mr Eraser, have a private training course for their horses, one never sees them ; and it would be disqualification to attempt to. Grovernor is a much improved horse, looks well, and will run very forward. Chancellor, Laertes, and Blue Jacket have no show. Le Loup has not left Dunedin yet. On Dit I wouldn't touch, after her wretched performance at Greraldine. The horses I that are in the Derby I cannot give an opinion about at present. Lina and Hilda are not good enough for the distance. Envy filly, Catanette filly, and Holderness appear to me out of place in siieh a race as this. Dan has not arrived yet. He had better stop at home and have a cut in at the country meetings. THE CANTERBURY CUP. 3?or the Cup Mata is still favourite, at 500 to 250 (taken in one line), but still I can't stand him. Ido not think his trainer can fetch him to the post fit, and a horse must be fit to carry top weight for two miles and a quarter, and beat our good three-year-olds. THE MELBOURNE CUP. The latest information from Melbourne about the New Zealand horses is very unsettled. They are not going well in their training, and there seems to be a disposition here to lay them. In a "week or two, when I have seen all the horses, or as many as I shall be allowed to sec, I will send you my tips for the principal events at the Christchurch Metropolitan Meeting.
