SPORTING TELEGRAMS
— I am happy to anncmnce that 1 have arranged with a well-known " sport " at Christcburch to forward the latest intelligence by telegraph every week. A selection of items from first message will be found hereunder : — — Le Loup and Mata arc expected at Christchurch this week from Dunedin. — There are a lot of grand two-year-olds for the Welcome Stakes in training- this year in Christchurch. — There is plenty of wagering on the Melbourne Derby and Cup at Christchurch Tattersall's, Somnus being xuuch fancied for the Derby. Duchess was backed for the Melbourne Cup heavily on Tuesday. — Johnny Keen arrived at Christchurch on Saturday night with his team, consisting of Lady Emma, Legerdemain, Gitania, Kaupo colt, Mata's two-year-old brother, and Gorton. His quarters are at Sam Powell's. All are looking well, especially Lady Emma. — The G-eraldinc meeting takes place place on the 20th of next month. Speculation is pretty lively on the principal events, G to 4 being taken (each) against Clarence and The Agent for the Hurdles, 7 to -i (each) against Coldstream and Luna for the Publicans' Handicap, and 2 to 1 (taken) against Coldstream for the Cup. — Christchurch meeting : Betting is coufinecl to doubles and trebles, the principal picks being Dauphin and Peeress colt for Derby ; Lady Emma, Libeller, Louis DOr, and Grip for the C.J.C.; and Mata, Le Loup, Peeress colt, and Dauphin for the Cup. Lady Emma has been backed for all the money in the market at 100 to 15. Mata has gone back to 100 to 2i for the Cup, and Le Loup is backed at 100 to 10 for the Handicap, and 100 to 15 for the Cup. The betting on the Derby is 100 to 2-t Dauphin and Peeress.
