— When London was nearly destroyed by fire in 1666, it rose again like the Phoenix from its ashes more beautifully grand than before, and in this our fair city of Auckland we have a good example of what prudence, perseverance and pluck combined with fair dealing', honest enterprise and business ability forming a trinity of qualities that make the possessor bound to succeed in the person of Mr Aley. the well-known watchmaker and jeweller, of Queen-street, who only a short time ago was burnt out of house and home, his stock destroyed and nothing left but hope, and now thanks to the above qualities he too has risen like the Phoenix and his establishment contains one of the largest and best assortments of watches in New Zealand, which he is enabled to offer to the public at prices unprecedented in Auckland, his immense stock being imported direct from the manufactory at home at first price. Mr Aley's stock is well worthy of inspection, and working men who require a good, solid, substantial, correct timekeeper at a price to suit the times will do well to pay him a visit. —American Waltham Watches were Awarded the Only Two First Prizes at the Melbourne International Exhibition, 1880-81, being Higher Awards than, any other Exhibitor received for watches. — When two gushing young damsels make a great display of bidding each other good-bye, it only means another interpretation of Shakespeare's " Much adieu about nothing." — On Monday, Messrs Tonks and Co. will offer for sale at their rooms a splendid lot of grand pianos by Lipp and Sohn, Rosnier, liord and Ehrhardt. These instruments are well worth inspection. — At the end of Lent in New Zealand we generally have a regular north caster. A suit of tweed well shrunk, well fitted and well made by J. Ford, Tailor, of Queen-street, will keep out all north casters or south westers— only ninety shillings the suit. — A Frenchman asked an Englishman if there were any irregular verbs in English and received in reply the following example, "I go, thou weutest, he departed, we made tracks, you cut sticks, they skedaddled." — The population of the City of Cork is about 75,000. Think of the 75,000 cork soles and if you want to save your body get cork soles to your boots and prevent rheumatism and all other ism except scepticism. So try a pair of boots made by Garrett Bros., of Wake-field-street, warranted to keep damp and cold out. — "A soft voice in woman always goes with a gentle spirit" said a gentleman to a friend he was visiting, when all at once a fearful noise was heard, he paused, and continued, " What's that ? a crash of crockery?" "No," was the reply of the friend as he heaved a sigh, •• that's my wife calling me." It took two of the best dresses from Messrs Munro and Milligan's large stock to make peace in that household. —Trade Mark, Waltham, Mass. —The American Watch Company, of Waltham, Massachusetts, U.S.A., hereby give notice that tneir Trade Mark, " Waltham, Mass." is now registered in the Australian Colonies of Victoria, New South Wales, and New ■ Zealand. Proceedings will be taken against any person copying or imitating same, or any vendors selling or offering for sale watches bearing colourable imitations or in any way infringing our rights. — American Watch Company, Waltham, Mass. — Two loving beings who were about to be married, were sitting together one evening, going on as is usual in such cases when she observed to him rather petulantly : " Charley, you don't understand anything about hugging; you haven't got the knack of it." "Indeed," he replied in a disheartened tone, " that's very strange, for I've been practising on two or three girls for several months." It required a gold *vatch and chain from Mr Singleton's in Victoria-street to soothe her wounded feelings. — What splendid teeth Miss Edwards has, and as it is the chief ornament of the face that so often captivates the eye, no wonder she has so many admirers that she hardly knows how to make a selection. One would think she paid almost daily visits to the dentist, when I know she nevei-;had the toothache in her life nor ever expended a single sixpence with any dentist. Ever since she had teeth she has brought them to what they are by the use of Hill's Odonto and anyone else may soon get theirs to look just as nice with a bottle of the some, and a good toothbrush to be had opposite the Theatre Royal. — More excitement was caused during the unloading of the Dunkeld than has been eviuced during the experience of the oldest habitues of that locality. Upon enquiry of the cause, the only answer was the mention of the well-known name " Jack Phillips," and as everybody was intently examining the cases, the supposition was that Jack himself must be in one of them. We can confidently state he was not, but that they contained a variety of the finest goods ever showed in this market, and which may now be had at 55s a suit or in the celecrated 13» 6d trousers at J. D. Phillips', 170, Queen-street.
