Political Notes & Notions
The land question, is again coming to the front, and certain to make a large figure in our politics for the next few years. It has to be regarded in several aspects. First we have the Crown lands to deal with, and to say how they shall be administered so as to secure prompt and easy settlement upon them. Then we have the native lands which Parliament and the Government have refused to deal with, and which they have resolved to hand over to private speculators. We have to legislate upon them so as to offer, if it be possible, an equal chance to the large and to the small buyer. Lastly we have to deal with the future of the Colony, guarding it against the permanent and privileged maintenance of great tracts of country in single families, to the danger and detriment of the community at large. It is to these questions that Sir George Grey addressed the most telling parts of his speech at the Thames. It is on them that a very different politician — Major Atkinson — also spoke at some length in his speech at Hawera.
