THE LAMENT OF THE TOTALISATOR.
My days are in the yellow leaf, The 'fruits of honest gain are gone ; Not once, or twice I've come to grief — " Kick out" is mine alone. The Ring is rotten to the core, The race is sold, the flags agree, Yet betting men look on and pour The vials of their wrath on me. They let the grinning monkeys in, The loafing and the cheating crew ; They bet, and hedge, and lose, and win ; But I must bid the course "adieu." If saints had turned me from the gate, I had not so unhappy been ; But should the sinners reprobate, A poor, deluded, lost machine.
