Hemust be very close to the top iv the batting averages for the season, while his bowling average is a high one. —The Saturday Afternoon Recreation Clubwill have an extra gathering at Vauxhall Gardens, North. Shore, next Friday. Special prizes for archery and croquet contests are expected to be given. —A young man named Hughes, in Freeman's Bay, is engaged in the construction of an opensailmg boat to take part in the second-class race at the approaching Ponsonby Regatta. Her dimensions wffl. be about the same as those of the "Madge" and, " Observer. —It is announced that the Ponsonby Rowing Club has refused to accept ' the " amateur " definition agreed to by the club delegates, the ground of objection bemg that those engaged in "manual labour" are included amongst professionals. Ido not know when this decision was come to, but certainly no meeting of the club was called for the purpose of considering the matter.
