A great deal has been said for and against sweeps. The bookmakers are, of course, against them, though how it can injure them I am at a loss to conceive, as for the most part those who invest in sweeps would, on no account, back a horse with a bookmaker. It is, however, quite evident that they are most popular in Auckland and the surrounding country. Mr. Abbott, of the United Service Hotel, had the largest number of subscribers on the Melbourne Cup in the colonies, Avith the exception of Mr. Miller of Melbourne. Mr. Abbott had no less than 7364 subscribers, a number that has never been equalled in New Zealand. The whole arrangements Avere carried out without a hitch and no complaints made. This redounds greatly to his credit and is more than can be said of the generality of sweeps which are generally got up for the purpose of enticing men to the bar. Mr. Abbott has a large SAveep on the Atickland Races on a new principle, Avhich gives an investor a much better chance of winning, as there are prizes on all races and for all horses engaged at the meeting. I strongly advise intending investors to get one of his circulars. He has also a sweep (unlimited) on the Champion Race to be run in Melbourne.
