Apropos of the par. inlastissuere legal joking, a friend informs me that Mr. Sam Jackson is the wit j9«7- excellence of the profession. There are, it appears, any number of stories afloat ahout his sayings, some of them unmistakably "real jam." Here is an old one, which is however, good enough to hear re-telling. Mr. Jackson, as most people know, has a profound horror of Sir George Grey, whom he believes to he — well, everything that is politically had. One day he was arguing with a staunch Greyite, who, after advancing all sorts of pleas on behalf of his idol, woundup with, "Well, Mr. Jackson, you must admit that Sir George Grey is the saviour of New Zealand?" "Yes," was the irascible retort, "and he ought to have been crucified long ago."
