A very common instance of how large sums of money are "knocked down" in Auckland on the occasion of periodical sprees came under my notice last week. A young fellow, who, I helieve, has no friends in the colony, came down from the hush to see the circus. He had in his possession considerably over £100, which he had earned on the gum fields during the last few months. He went in for a proper blow out, and eight days after his arrival in town, he had only sufficient cash left to pay his fare to Riverhead. The most astonishing part of the affair is that he appeared to be perfectly satisfied with the manner in Avhich he had spent the money, and with the pleasure which the "spree" had afforded him. In this connection, I might mention a fascinating young Hebe who has profited to the extent of a valuable gold watch and chain, but, of course, I won't.
