OUR PUZZLE

RULES. To make room for several important paragraphs, the Puzzle Rules have been crushed out. They are exactly the same as in last issue. In future we shall only publish them, fortnightly. All letters to be addressed to the — PUZZLE EDITOR OF THE " OBSERVER," Box 167, Post Office, Auckland. '. ■ OBSERVER COMPETITION, No. 6. COMPETITION, No. 1. A correspondent complains that in the above competition I treated a conundrum and a riddle as synonymous terms. I fear this was the case, but the mistake will not occur again. COMPETITION, No. 2. A gentleman writes to me to claim the guinea for the prize nonsense verse, but unfortunately encloses the wrong " norn de plume." I also find, on reference to his M.S., that there is no coupon attached. The ommission (see Rule 2) of course disqualifies him. A man may, if he likes, send half-a-dozen different efforts signed in half-a-dozen different ways, but the rules render it essential that each must be accompanied with a coupon. Competition No. 2 is therefore awarded to the author of verses 17 b and c, which the jury (who liave again been consulted on the subject) consider the next best to No. 8. The author will please forward "norn de plume" and real name and address immediately. COMPETITION, No. 3. This competition has, I regret to say, proved a complete failure. Only about two dozen answers have come to hand, and. of these hardly any are worth printing. The prize is awarded to No. 5, the writer of which will please form "norn deplume" and address.
