FOR POWER POLES.
NEW ZEALAND TREES
VIEWS OF AN ENGINEER. PRESERVATION TREATMENT. The suitability of New Zealandgrown timbers for electric power poles was examined in a paper read to the Electric Supply Authority Engineers’ conference in Wellington by its author, Mr. A. Buckingham (North Canterbury). “New Zealand is a country eminently suitable for growing timber trees,” he said. ,r We cannot profitably reproduce the indigenous trees as they are very slow in coming to economic maturity, but there remain the numerous exotics, principally conifers and cucalypts, which grow with remarkable rapidity,” he stated. “Unfortunately rapidity of growth generally results in softer and less durable timber. If however, preservative treatment of these timbers can bo effected easily and thoroughly, as for the coniferous timbers of the Northern Hemisphere, there becomes available a new source of pole timber fulfilling all technical requirements.
