WIDOWER’S DEATH.
NO WITNESSES AVAILABLE. KNOCKED DOWN BY CAR. VERDICT AT INQUEST. [By Telegraph. —Press Association]. AUCKLAND, Sept. 24. Death was due to hemorrhage of the brain and bronchial pneumonia following upon his being knocked down by a car driven by Alexander Roger Bean, according to the verdict returned by the coroner, Air. F. K. Hunt, at an inquest into the death of Harold John Hewlett. Air. Hewlett was a widower, aged 59. He was on sustenance, and lived in Orakei Road. Senior Sergeant Flanagan appeared for the police, Air. T. N. Ilohnden for the driver of the car, and Air. 11. George for the relatives of Air. Hewlett.
Alexander Roger Bean, aged 16, a student at the Auckland Grammar School, said lie was driving a car along Tamaki Drive towards the city about 8.30 p.m. on August 25. He was travelling at a speed of 28 or 30 miles an hour, and on his correct side of tho road. Witness did not see Air. Hewlett and was not aware of his presence on the road until the right mudguard of the car struck him. Tho injured man was removed to the Auckland Hospital. No other vehicles were n the vicinity at the time of the accident. and there were no witnesses. Dr. J R. Hinds, who examined the injured man at the Auckland Hospitla, described the injuries, from which Air. Hewlett died on September 5.
