VOICE OF THE RATEPAYER.
Sir,—After reading the leading article in your yesterday’s issue under the above heading, I would, as a large ratepayer, like to express my appreciation. Your paper is to be commended for bringing before the public the urgent [necessity of a body constituted to represent the ratepayers whom at present are financially responsible for the affairs of the town, but who have no say in its administration, being deprived of their local franchise. I trust that every citizen has treated the leader as constructive criticism in the cause of right and justice. Should the ratepayers not take heed of tho warning given, and which, by the way, is the t'alk of the town, when the time comes for a review of the debenture-holders’ position we may be faced with the question of increased rates. Tho debenture-hold ers will have the best legal aid in their support and we will, as in tho past, without being organised and having no expert adviser, be left in an unenviable position. I wish to refrain in this letter from making any further constructive criti cism or suggestions, but endorse the sentiments expressed in your leader of yesterday, and respectfully suggest to all ratepayers and citizens that a public meeting be called at an early date to discuss a policy in the interests of all concerned.—l am, etc., B. D. CHAPMAN.
