POTATO EXPORT.
Although about 20,000 tons of seed potatoes and a small quantity of table tubers were exported from New Zealand to South Africa last year, no shipments are expected this season. Christchurch merchants explain that a duty of about £1 a ton on New Zealand potatoes is a definite handicap against competitors in the Northern Hemisphere. The margin of profit is considered to be too small to justify interest in the market.
Skin As Health Indicator. The flexibility of the skin of healthy, thriving cattle is due to its well-nourished condition, and also to the deposit of a layer of fat just under it. The skin or the half-starved or unhealthy animal becomes hard, harsh, and inflexible —in other words, hide-bound. This is not a disease in itself, but simply an indication that something is wrong. If it is a case of poor feeding the skin will quickly become more flexible when this is remedied, and nothing will loosen tight hides more quickly than linseed cake, with generous feeding. One cannot expect an animal which has been allowed to drift into a neglected condition to catch up with others of the same age which have been well fed, but a change in feeding and conditions will bring about a wonderful improvement in the majority of cases.
