DRAINAGE WORK.
UNITED HAURAKI BOARD. REVIEW FOR THE TERM. Reference to the work of the past term was made at the Mauraki United Drainage Board by the chairman, Mr. H. 11. Hicks, at Friday’s meeting.
Mr. llicks stated that the Board had raised and strengthened the stopbanks at Shelly Beach and Kopuarahi for a considerable distance below the Ferry approach, and had alsy erected and completed a stopbauk on the Huirau Point from the Te Kauri No. 1 outlet to liuk up with the bank erected by the Public Works Department, the bank constructed by the Board being over 40 chains in length. Other sections of stopbauk had been constructed along the Waihou River between Turua and Orongo, all of which work had been done bv hand labour.
In addition, said Mr. Hicks, a considerable length of stopbanking had been erected and repaired by tho Lands Department’s Diesel dredge at the back of Mr. Newsham’s property, connecting up with the Orongo portion. Lengthy negotiations had been carried out for the past three years with the Minister for Lands and Mr. J. Thorn, M.P., Fo secure assistance to make a strong stopbauk on the Piako River in the Horaliia area, and the Board had now the promise of the Diesel dredge to carry out this work ns soon ns it has finished its work in the Orongo area.
