THURSDAY, DECEMBER 23, 1937. HOLIDAY MOTORING.
"With manct towards nono; with charity for all; with firmnais • in the right, •• God give* us to mo tho right/'— Lincoln.
Already holiday motor traffic has begun, and each day it Avill increase, reaching its maximum density at the end of this Aveek and being swelled again at the New Year. All the indications —the greater number of cars registered, activity at the garages, and the promise of more seasonal weather than at Christmas last year —point to record holiday traffic and unprecedented congestion near the cities. This fact, unfortunately, will increase the risk of accident and the Minister for Transport, the Hon. R. Semple, and his department are making strenuous and necessary efforts to impress upon the travelling public the need for safety-first precautions during the holiday season. Too often does the Press have to record deaths and injuries on the roads on the same day as it reports holiday activities and the enjoyment of thousands through the length and breadth of the Dominion. Mr. Semple has pointed out that last year between Christmas Eve and Boxing Day six were killed and 42 were injured, 28 seriously, in road accidents. Between Christmas Day and New Year's Day there were 60 accidents involving serious injury. The whole of the Dominion must share the Minister's concern at this toll, which mars what should be the happiest period of the year. In an earnest effort to reduce the casualty list Mr. Semple asks motorists to follow the golden rule: "Take no risks!" Speeding, cutting corners, failing to give way, cutting-in and overtaking on the brow of a hill are the cardinal errors that cause most accidents. And as during the holiday period many inexperienced drivers will be on strange roads and will be passing through towns for the first time, the need for the "Take no risks!" slogan is greater than ever.
