FOR 'VARSITY ENTRANCE. NOT EDUCATION. Trenchant criticism of the programme of work for tlie matriculation examination, as laid down by the University of New Zealand, was made by the headmaster of the Otorohanga High School at the school prize-giving ceremony. He said that, after many years of observation, he had formed the opinion that the matriculation course did not educate but set a premium on cramming, excessive homework, and militaristic methods' in the classrooms. "All too often it causes the child to get a totally wrong impression of what j;rue education means," he added.
