A BIG PROBLEM.
REPLACING SCHOOLS. MORE MODERN DESIGNS. REMARKS BY MINISTER, [By Teiegraph.—Press Association] AUCKLAND, Dec. 13. . The problem facing the Education Department in the replacing of the old type of schools with modern buildings suited to New Zealand conditions, was given particular application to the normal school in Christchurch by the Minister for Education this morning
in opening the new Ponsonby Kinder garten. f
Mr. Fraser pointed out how the normal school, a massive imposing Gothic building, was designed in England for the new colony It had been designed without any reference to New Zealand conditions, and faced the south.
“This is one of fTie most important problems my Department has to face,” he sagd. “To get rid of it is like attacking the Rock of Gibraltar.”
The Minister expressed full appreciation of the work of kindergartens and their place in the educational system.
