THAMES GOLF.

WEEK-END MATCHES. PARS ON THE PLAY. [By “B. LINE]. Playing at To Aroluron Saturday, on the magnificently kept 9-hole course there, the Thames team found the opposition just a shade too good for them, and the men Avon only one game, Avhile the ladies could only finish ail square in a single event. However, on the Te Aroha links, local knowledge is a big factor, and the fact that the ball did not have to be cleaned and placed, as on their own course, found Thames pairs usually several holes doAvn before they Avere picking the ball off the fairways cleanly and settling doAvn to confident golf. K. Griffin Avas right on his game, getting plenty of length on the Avell-cut fairways and keeping out of trouble with straight shots Avhich avoided the bunkers. His putting Avas probably the most consistent of the Thames team on the day.

N. Rigby was playing a magnificent long game and only his failure to gauge the strength of the greens, where lie invariably finished short of the pin, gave the opposition the filial load.

At the outset 4 down, C. Poulgrain and J. Moran, playing top pair, slowly recovered their position, and hau theii putting been at all reliable, their fairway play would have seen them finish better than 4 and 3 down.

The only ladies’ pair to hold the To Aroha opposition was Mrs. Price and Mrs. Rigbv, who combined well to see a keen tussle 'finish aTI square on the 18th. green.

Another good golfing day on Sunday saw a team from the llauraki Plains Club trying out conclusions on the Thames links with a local team. A four-ball match in the morning saw W. .Tack and N. Uigby, in their respective pairs, playing to bogey and putting accurately from all over the greens. A. Fisher was also right on his game and played some good holes. In the afternoon, singles found the llauraki Plains team notching a few wins, but Thames were well up on the day’s play.

C. R. Clemson, who accounted for D. Mahoney in his match 6 and 5, was driving too consistently for his opponent, and played some sound golf while the match lasted.

T. McCarroll is hitting a longer ball now that conditions suit his play, and he won his match mainly with useful woods on the fairways.

Next Saturday should sec K. Griffin, N. Rigby and W. Jack well up in the senior qualifying round, and N. Moran, T. Cameron and D. Galloway in tho junior, judging by the run of play over the week-end, but the dry conditions may not be present and a wet Week would see a complete upset in calculations.
