MAXIMUM PENALTY.
SUSTENANCE FRAUDS. MAN GETS SIX MONTHS. CASES IN WELLINGTON. [By Telegraph.—Press Association] WELLINGTON, Aug. 20. The maximum penalty of six months’ imprisonment was imposed by Mr. Luxi'ord, S.M., on Clarence Valentine Burton, aged 32, a salesman, on charges of obtaining a total of £!!/8/- sustenance by making six nil returns of iil--ome whereas in each of the six weeks lie earned £2/8/4. Tt was sfafed that accused was lmir••ied, living apart from bis wife and •wo children, whose maintenance had '■een paid by the Labour Department. Pending a report from the probation officer, Kenneth Cole was remanded on two charges.
It was stated that he obtained employment as a relieving porter at a hotel and was paid’ the award rates for nearly four weeks, during which he submitted four declarations that lie was unemployed anil his private earnings and other income were nil.
