SERIOUS PROBLEMS.
AMERICAN TIMBER TRADE. AUSTRALIAN SHIPMENTS. SHARP FKEIGHT RISES. [By Telegraph. —Press Association J AUCKLAND, Aug. 9. "Freights are two and a half times greater than a year ago, while r.o.b. prices have advanced from 25 to 30 per cent.," said Mr, R. T. Vanderficld, managing director of a leading timber firm in Sydney, who is travelling to Vancouver by the Aorangi to investigate the problems connected with the carriage of timber from the Pacitio coast of America to Australia.
"Some shippers have not stood up to their contracts," said Mr. Vanderficld, ,f and failure to deliver is a serious mat-
ter. One of the reasons for high freights is the use of tramp steamers for the carriage of scrap metal from America to Japan. Last year shipments exceeded 1,000,000 tons." The visitor added that two years ago Britain bought scarcely a foot of timber from British Columbia, but last year purchased 1,000,000,000 feet in 250 cargoes.
