FINED FOR ASSAULT.

ON EX-HOTEL LICENSEE. £lO PENALTY IMPOSED. SEQUEL TO INQUIKY. [By Telegraph. —Press Association] AUCKLAND, May 2<J. For assaulting o'osopli Henry Winter, formerly licensee of the Wavcrley Hotel, a fine of £lO was imposed on Ernest Munro by Mr. Orr-Walker, S.M., in the Police Court.

The police said an inquiry agent booked a room at the hotel and later

accompanied by another inquiry agent and Munro, went along the fire escape to a window outside Winter's room. Munro raised the window and jumped into the darkened room. The inquiry agent shone a torch on Winter while Munro assaulted him. Mrs. Munro, who was in the room, switched on the light and Munro and Winter moved out into the corridor. Later the housekeeper was called to Winter's room and found him in a Hazed condition suffering from severe injuries. The police found an Indian club broken in two pieces. Winter was some weeks in hospital.

Counsel for Munro said he and his Wife had since been reconciled. Counsel for Winter said Mrs. Munro Was in the room for the first time, having been called on business. The room was not darkened. Winter did not attack Munro first.
