MR. CLAUDE JEWELL
WELL-KNOWN JOURNALIST.
SUDDEN DEATH AT HOME. (By Telegraph.— Press Association). AUCKLAND, Nov. 6. The death occurred suddenly at his residence, Birkdalo, this morning of Mr. Claude Lockhart Jewell, aged 64, veteran journalist. The late Mr. Jewell was born in Gloucestershire, England, and spent some of his younger years on the sheep and cattle stations of Australia. He took part in the South African War and held the Queen’s Medal with three clasps. He has been editor of the “Free Lance,” Wellington, the “New Zealand Times,” Wellington, and the “New Zealand Observer,” Auckland, and was at one time sub-editor of the New Plymouth “News.” He had been a member of the Auckland “Star” literary staff since 1923, and was at work as usual yesterday.
The late Air. Jewell is survived by his widow, five daughters and a son, all of whom are single. He will be accorded a Masonic funeral at Birkenhead to-morrow. He was highly esteemed by his confreres and a wide circle of friends.
