WELLINGTON CONTROVERSY
(By Telegraph. —Press Association). WELLINGTON, Sept. 30.
The statement made in a recent letter to the New Zealand Rugby Union by Mr, K- C. Tennent, of Woodville, concerning the formation of the first Rugby Football Club in the Dominion is challenged by a newspaper correspondent, who.says: "Mr. Tennent is wrong in saying the club he assisted to form in Nelson in 1868 was the first football club in Neiv Zealand."
"Christchurch Football Club," states the correspondent, "was formed in 1863. This club lost its records of the first four years, so it dates its career from 1867, when existing records began." The correspondent adds that confirmation is to be found in old newspaper files of the 'sixties.
