Onslaught on Turkeys. During the week-end the number of turkeys In New Zealand were depleted to the extent of twenty. They formed part, of the supper viands at the Thames Military Ball last evening.

Locking Skylights. Thames has been free of burglaries

for so long that many business men

have relaxed in taking precautions. Where skylights are used, care should be taken that they are securely fastened on the inside.

Motor-car Sales. One Thames motor-car agent reports the sale of three new cars during the past few days. Other sales are pending, so, in spite of recent weather, the business outlook, at any rate, is bright.

Bill Sykes! Citizens are still wondering if the Bill Sykes who visited business premises after hours last week-end is town locally. There is not wanting evidence that the premises 6f at least one other business firm had also been visited, though nothing was actually taken. Stolen "Cutters!" A good story is told of a Rugby enthusiast who resides down the Coast. Before leaving the town on Saturday to attend the Peace Cup match at Rhodes Park, he purchased at one of the stores two bottles of methylated spirits and a tin of shellac. The storekeeper put the spirit in two beer bottles and wrapped them up in the same way as the publicans do. The bottles were placed in the car and the owner drove to the Park. After parking the car he went to the stand, leaving the two bottles on the seat in the car. When he returned the parcel had disappeared. The thief's surprise when he tasted the contents of the "cutters" can be imagined.

First Military Ball. The first annual ball in connection with C .Squadron,. Auckland (East Coast) was held in the King's Theatre last night, and was largely attended, the function being a great success. Proceedings were opened with a grand march led by Colonel Wyatt and Mrs. MoCarroll, and music, was supplied by the Blue Boys' Orchestra. The supper arrangements in-St. James' Hall were under the capable mangement of Mrs. Hunter, of the Kia "Ora Tearooms. The beautiful array of Iceland poppies, supplied and artistically arranged on the supper tables by Mrs. Pease, drew forth much favourable
