SIR A. PABKHILL'S VIEWS
TRANS-TASMAN LINK.
(By Telegraph—Press Association). AUCKLAND, Sept. 29.
The fact that negotiations between the Commonwealth Government and Britain for the BritainAustralia section of the Empire mails project is approaching finality was announced by Sir Archdale Parkhill, the Australian Minister for Defence arid Air Services, who arrived by the Awatea on invitation from the New Zealand Government to discuss the New Zealand section of the air mails plan. "The proposals are. of considerable magnitude,":, said Sir Archdale, and he would be very, interested to discuss-the. position with the New Zealand- representatives. He added that the question as a whole was the turning of the problems of the control, of.the service, surcharge and. costs. Britain wanted flying boats to be used throughout, including, the Tasman section. Australia would adopt the advice of experts.
Speaking personally, he said the flying boat might be expected to have a- psychological appeal, particularly over the Tasman. He considered the service between Australia and New Zealand Avas both necessary and desirable. The question had a bearing on Empire defence, but he was not in a position to speak on the relation of the project to defence.
