School Of Mines.

MONTHLY MEETING. CRUSHING CHARGES. MINERS' UNION CONCERNED. The usual monthly meeting of the Council of the Thames School of Mines was held last evening. Present: Mr. C. S. Donovan, president, and Messrs. J. W. Danby, L. Judd, P. L. Jenkin, C. L. Grange, J. H. Adams, H. Lowe and J. W. Smith. Mr. E. J. Scoble, Inspector of Mines, was also in attendance. , Crushing and Treating Charges. Owing to rising costs through fche introduction of recent legislation, the Council felt that some increases in the cost of crushing and treating ore would haVe to be made. The plant under the Council's control was not originally intended to handle this work as a business, but it had carried on in the interests of the ! district.

It was decided that, with the consent of the Department, the charges should be raised to £3/7/6 for one lode; £3/3/- per lode up to 5 lodes in one parcel; and £3 per lode for parcels of over five lpdes.

This matter had been discussed at a previous meeting, and the Department had been notified, and the Miners' Union had wired protesting against the increased charges. The Department had written asking that the matter be deferred for further consideration.

It was decided to accede to this request in the meantime. It was also the Council's opinion that a uniform charge by all the Schools of Mines in the Dominion should be brought into force for assays at 7/6 each. This suggestion had been put before the Department and a reply was received stating t'hat inquiries as to charges by other Schools of Mines were being made. Du»t-removing Plant. Word was received that a sum is to be placed on the Supplementary Estimates for the installation of a suitable fan to obviate the dust nuisance in the assay department. Tenders. Two tenders were received for the construction of a self-feeder vibrator and amalgamator, and were forwarded to the Department, Report. T*he visiting: committee's repoiV was recer/ed stating that the shortage of ore at present was in a great measure due to the wet weather. Rules. Notice was received that the amended rules and statutes of the school, which had been submitted to the Minister for Mines, had been approved. Accounts. Accounts amounting to £46/2/10 were passed for payment. Director's Report for Month. The Director, Mr. H. Crawford, A.0.5.M., reported as follows: '•Some 407 gold and silver assays have been put through, and 19 lodes were treated in the battery for a return of 570 z 2dwts, 'valued at £223/6/-.
